This data series is taken from the diagram ,"Husband and Wife Families as Percent of All Families" with the more complete definition of: The percent of families that are headed by both a Husband and Wife. Includes a person married to and living with a householder who is of the opposite sex of the householder. The category, husband and wife, includes people in formal marriages, as well as people in common-law marriages. Note: unless otherwise specified, Spouse, does not include same-sex married couples even if the marriage was performed in a state issuing marriage certificates for same-sex couples.
