Shannon County Income Charts

This section shows the economic outlook and local economy using the most recent economic data from the 2015 Census Bureau. Starting with Figure 1 shows the median earnings per worker. Shannon County South Dakota shows it has $29,536 median earnings which is the smallest median earnings of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest median earnings in the area is Custer County with an earnings of $40,788 which is about 38% larger. Comparing median earnings to the United States average of $44,178, Shannon County is approximately a third the size. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, average median earnings of $37,232, Shannon County is approximately a fifth the size.

In Figure 2 we see a more complete view of income with the median household income and it has $26,383 median income which is the smallest median income of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest median income in the area is Custer County with an income of $50,903 which is about 93% larger. Comparing median income to the United States average of $53,482, Shannon County is approximately half the size. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, average median income of $50,338, Shannon County is approximately half the size.

The next section examines a variety of different income statistics. In Figure 3 we see that Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of median earnings of less than $10,000 at 27.7% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Dawes County with 36.0%. Second, it has has one of the largest proportions of median earnings between $20,000 and $49,999 at 40.6% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Jackson County with 45.9%.

Figure 5 has the Average number of hours worked in a typical work week during the year, Shannon County shows it has 36.5 average hours which is the smallest average hours of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest average hours in the area is Jackson County with an average hours of 43.9 which is about 20% larger. Dividing median annual worker earnings by the average number of hours worked in a year in Figure 6 shows that Shannon County illustrates it has $15.56 average hourly earnings which is less than most other counties in the area. The county with the highest average hourly earnings in the area is Custer County with an average hourly earnings of $19.81 which is about 27% larger. Comparing average hourly earnings to the United States average of $22.12, Shannon County is approximately a third the size. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, average average hourly earnings of $18.13, Shannon County is approximately a sixth the size.

Figure 7 examines the number of self employed people in the area based on the number of people who reported any self employment income. Shannon County illustrates it has 7.9% Self Employed which is the smallest Self Employed of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest Self Employed in the area is Jackson County with a Self Employed of 29.2% approximately 3.0 times bigger.

In terms of the source of where income comes from, in Figure 9 Shannon County has the largest proportion of Public Assistance and SSI at 4.5% of the total and is ranked #1.

In the next chart, Figure 10, the median household income is shown for families broken down by racial group. has American Indian Family Income less than most other counties in the area at $25,887 of the total and is ranked 3d last in the group.

Figure 11 shows the cost of living for a variety of cost components from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Shannon County shows it has the largest cost of 101.7 for Cost of grocery items.

Shannon County Labor Force Charts

The next two charts look at the employment situation in the area using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS tracks unemployment statistics for a large number of areas throughout the country on a month to month basis. However, not every location in the U.S. is tracked by the BLS so the chart will show the closest location available (which may be the same location.) Figure 12 shows the monthly unemployment rate as well as a comparison to the unemployment rate for the United States. Shannon County shows it has 12.3% unemployment rate which is more than all the others in the area.

Figure 13 shows the labor fore participation which are the number of people either working or actively looking for work. Note people actively looking for work are also defined as unemployed but do not include people who have given up looking for work. it has 45.4% participation rate which is the smallest participation rate of all the other counties in the area.

The next two charts look at very recent, monthly trended employment related performance using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS tracks unemployment statistics for a large number of areas throughout the country on a month to month basis. However, not every location in the U.S. is tracked by the BLS so the chart will only show the closest location available (which may be the same location.) Figure 14 shows the monthly unemployment rate as well as a comparison to the unemployment rate for the United States. In Figure 14 the monthly unemployment rate is shown for and reveals that from January 2010 to October 2016 the Monthly Unemployment Rate went from 7.4% to 2.8%. This represents a decrease in the Monthly Unemployment Rate of 62.2%.

In Figure 15 the monthly labor force participation which are people actively looking for work are also defined as unemployed but do not include people who have given up looking for work. The participation level is shown for and shows that from March 2010 to September 2016 the Monthly Labor Force Participation went from 34,295 to 36,133. This represents an increase in the Monthly Labor Force Participation of 5.4%.

The Components of Employment Status graph in Figure 16 shows the composition of the labor force broken down by employed, unemployed, and not in the labor force (but 16 years of age or older). Shannon County has the largest proportion of unemployed at 12.3% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of not in labor force at 54.6% of the total and is ranked #1.

Part-time versus full-time workers are illustrated in Figure 17 that follows. Shannon County shows a difference of 71.2%.

The next employment related data item is shown in Figure 19 which is the percentage of families with only a single earner. Shannon County illustrates it has 35.5% families with a single earner which is more than all the others in the area. The percentage of families with no one working is depicted in Figure 20. Shannon County illustrates it has 29.4% families with no one working which is more than all the others in the area.

Shannon County Poverty Charts

The next section details information about poverty in the area. In Figure 21 the total number of people earning less than the poverty level are shown. Shannon County shows it has 7,271 total people earning less than the poverty level which is the 2nd most of all the counties in the area. The county with the highest total people earning less than the poverty level in the area is Pennington County with a total people earning less than the poverty level of 12,960 which is about 78% larger.

The next section details information about poverty in the area. In Figure 22 the total number of people earning less than the poverty level are shown. Shannon County illustrates it has 52.6% percent of people earning less than the poverty level which is more than all the others in the area.

In Figure 23 people who are in poverty are broken out by age group. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of person in poverty Under 12 Years at 29% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Bennett County with 36%. Second, it has has one of the largest proportions of person in poverty 12 to 17 years at 14% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Jackson County with 14%.

The next chart, Figure 24, shows the percentage of people in poverty by racial group. Shannon County has the largest proportion of White poverty rate at 24% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of American Indian poverty rate at 54% of the total and is ranked #1. Also, it has has one of the largest proportions of Hispanicp poverty rate at 31% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Custer County with 33%.

Figure 25 shows key poverty statistics for groups based on marriage status. Shannon County has the largest proportion of Married with children and in poverty at 56% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has has one of the largest proportions of Unmarried with children and in poverty at 63% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Jackson County (66%), and #1 Bennett County (75%) are larger. Also, it has has one of the largest proportions of Unmarried Female with children and in poverty at 68% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Bennett County with 72%.

The next chart looks at the percentage of people in poverty based on their education level in Figure 26 marriage status. Shannon County has the largest proportion of less than highschool in poverty at 69% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of highschool graduate and in poverty at 46% of the total and is ranked #1. Also, it has the largest proportion of Has some college and in poverty at 39% of the total and is ranked #1. In addition, it has the largest proportion of college graduate and in poverty at 21% of the total and is ranked #1. Figure 27 looks at only those people who make less than the poverty level of income and breaks down there employment status. We see that Shannon County has the largest proportion of people who are in poverty and not in Labor Force at 23.9% of the total and is ranked #1. Additionally, Figure 28 looks at the percentage of people who receive some form of public assistance including general assistance, temporary assistance or food stamps (i.e. SNAP.) We can see that Shannon County points out it has 48.1% households with public assistance which is more than all the others in the area.

Figure 29 shows the "Gini Index of Income Inequality" with a range from zero (perfect equality) to one (perfect inequality). Shannon County shows it has 50.6% the Gini Index which is more than all the others in the area.

Shannon County Work Commute Charts

Figure 30 shows a high level view of how people get to work (including the percent of people who work from home.) Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of people who bicycle or walk to work at 10% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Jackson County (13%), and #1 Dawes County (13%) are larger. Figure 31 shows a more detailed view of how people get to work and shows Shannon County has the largest proportion of people who carpooled at 19% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has has one of the largest proportions of people who walked at 9% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Dawes County (13%), and #1 Jackson County (13%) are larger.

In Figure 33 is shown a frequency distribution of the time that people leave for work. Shannon County has the largest proportion of people who leave for work between 7am to 730am at 29% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of people who leave for work between 730 am to 8am at 34% of the total and is ranked #1.

The next graph in Figure 34 shows the average number of minutes that it takes for people to commute to work. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of people with commute time between 10 to 14 minutes at 17% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Bennett County (17%), and #1 Pennington County (24%) are larger. Second, it has has one of the largest proportions of people with commute time between 20 to 24 minutes at 13% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Pennington County with 16%.

The average commute time is shown in Figure 35. Shannon County indicates it has 16 average commute time which is the 3d most of all other counties in the area. Figure 36 shows the comparison of male and female median earnings and Shannon County shows a difference of 4.0%. Figure 38 shows the total number of vehicles available for transportation and Shannon County has the largest proportion of No vehicle available at 5% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of 1 vehicle available at 37% of the total and is ranked #1. Figure 39 shows the percentage of people who both work and live in the same city (town or place.) Shannon County indicates it has 57% people who both work and live in the same city which is the 2nd smallest people who both work and live in the same city of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest people who both work and live in the same city in the area is Dawes County with a people who both work and live in the same city of 78% which is about 35% larger. Comparing people who both work and live in the same city to the United States average of 42%, Shannon County is about 36% larger. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, average people who both work and live in the same city of 69%, Shannon County is approximately a sixth the size.

Shannon County Jobs Charts

Similarly, Figure 45 shows the median earnings of women for the job categories and Shannon County demonstrates it has the largest median earnings of $36,875 for Earnings-Healthcare practitioners and tech occupations.

Shannon County Self Employment Charts

In Figure 49 the average annual self employment income is shown. Shannon County illustrates it has $75,040 average annual self employment income which is more than all the others in the area. Comparing average annual self employment income to the United States average of $34,399, Shannon County is 18% larger. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, average average annual self employment income of $39,388, Shannon County is about 91% larger.

Figure 50 shows the difference between the number of self employed men and self employed women. Shannon County shows a difference of 84.5%.
