Shannon County Population Charts

According to the most recent demographics data available from the Census Bureau released in December of 2015, Figure 1 Shannon County South Dakota illustrates it has 14,005 population which is the 2nd most of all the counties in the area. The county with the highest population in the area is Pennington County with a population of 104,574 and measures considerably bigger. Figure 3 compares the population change from 2010 to 2014 and we can see Shannon County indicates a decline of 419 (3%).

The population percent change for all areas for 2010 to 2014 is shown in Figure 4 and for Shannon County South Dakota shows it has 3.1% Population Change which is the 3d most of all other counties in the area. Comparing Population Change to the United States average of 1.7%, Shannon County and is 77.6% larger. Also, in contrast to the state of South Dakota, Population Change of 2.5%, Shannon County and is 22.3% larger.



Looking at population density in Figure 5 Shannon County reveals it has 7 population density which is the 2nd most of all the counties in the area. The next lower population density is Dawes County and is only about 2.2% smaller with population density of 7. The county with the highest population density in the area is Pennington County with a population density of 38 and is markedly bigger. Figure 6 shows the median age of the people and Shannon County shows it has 24.9 overall median age of all people which is the smallest overall median age of all people of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest overall median age of all people in the area is Custer County with an age of 52.1 and measures about twice as large. Comparing the median age of men versus women in Figure 7 we find that Shannon County illustrates median age of men which is about 5.4% smaller than median age of women.

Looking at the breakdown of age groups in the generation analysis in Figure 8 Shannon County has the largest proportion of people less than 20 year olds at 41.1% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has one of the largest proportions of people 20 to 29 year olds at 16.8% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Dawes County with 18.6%.

Figure 9 shows the breakdown of racial groups in the area with Shannon County has the largest proportion of people who are of some other race at 95.5% of the total and is ranked #1. Figure 10 shows the Hispanic or Latino population of the area with Shannon County shows it has 1.1% people who are Hispanic or Latino which is the smallest people who are Hispanic or Latino of all the other counties in the area. Figure 11 is the ratio of the population of men to women and shows total male population and measures about 7.1% smaller than total female population.

Shannon County Marriage and Families Charts

Figure 12 shows the marriage status. it has the largest proportion of percent of people never married at 60% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 13 is the average size of a typical family. Shannon County illustrates it has 5.4 average family size which is the highest of all counties in the area.

Figure 14 shows the ratio of families to total households and that Shannon County indicates it has 82% percent of people who are in a family which is the highest of all counties in the area.

Looking at husband and wife headed families as a percent of all families in Figure 15, Shannon County indicates it has 34% percent of people in a husband and wife family which is the smallest percent of people in a husband and wife family of all the other counties in the area. The county with the highest percent of people in a husband and wife family in the area is Custer County with a percent of 89% and measures approximately 2.7 times bigger.

Figure 16 shows the head of household using the ratio of male to female headed households. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of percent of families with male head of household at 14.2% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Bennett County with 17.9%. Second, it has the largest proportion of percent of families with female head of household at 52.1% of the total and is ranked #1.

Shannon County Mothers and Babies Charts

The next section of charts look at mothers and baby births over the last 12 months. Figure 17 shows the rate of women aged 15 to 50 years old who have given birth. Shannon County reveals it has 10.6% percent of women who gave birth which is the 2nd most of all the counties in the area. The county with the highest percent of women who gave birth in the area is Jackson County with a birth rate of 15.3% and measures 43.6% larger. Figure 18 shows the breakdown of the mothers age for all births. it has the largest proportion of percent of births to mothers aged 15 to 19 at 15% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has one of the largest proportions of percent of births to mothers aged 20 to 24 at 49% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Custer County (51%), and #1 Jackson County (61%) are larger.

In Figure 19 the percentage is shown of all births in the last 12 months were the mothers were unmarried. Shannon County indicates it has 81.1% percent of unwed women who have given birth which is at the top of all other counties in the area.

The next Figure 20 shows the percent of unwed mothers who are on public assistance. Shannon County shows it has 2.1% percent of unwed women who have given birth and are on public assistance which is the 2nd most of all the counties in the area. The county with the highest percent of unwed women who have given birth and are on public assistance in the area is Pennington County with a percent of unwed women who have gave birth and are on public assistance of 6.0% and measures approximately 2.9 times bigger.

Figure 23 shows the comparative rate of unwed mothers who have given birth in the last 12 months are broken down by racial group. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of American Indian unwed birth rate at 81.1% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Custer County with 100.0%.

Figure 24 shows unwed mothers who have given birth in the last 12 months broken down by poverty level. Shannon County has percent of unwed births to mother living below the poverty level in the center of other counties in the area at 77.1% of the total and is ranked in the middle of the group. For all citizens, Figure 25 breaks down the original place of birth. it has one of the largest proportions of percent of unwed mothers with less than high school education at 55% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Fall River County with 100%.

Shannon County Singles Charts

Figure 26 compares the single people in each area broken down by never married, divorced, and widowed. Shannon County shows it has 60% percent of people never married which is the highest of all counties in the area. Comparing percent of people never married|percent of people divorced|percent of people widowed to the United States average of 33%, Shannon County about twice as large. Also, versus the state of South Dakota, percent of people never married|percent of people divorced|percent of people widowed of 30%, Shannon County about twice as large. Figure 27 shows the single men in each area. Shannon County shows it has 65% percent of men who have never been married which is more than all othercounties in the area. Comparing percent of men who have never been married|percent of men who are divorced|percent of men who are widowed to the United States average of 36%, Shannon County about twice as large. Also, in contrast to the state of South Dakota, percent of men who have never been married|percent of men who are divorced|percent of men who are widowed of 34%, Shannon County and is about twice as large. Figure 28 shows the single women in each area. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent of women who have never been married at 55% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 29 shows the single men between the age of 18 and 65, in each area, broken down by age group. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of percent of Single Men 25 to 29 at 16% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Bennett County with 19%. Second, it has one of the largest proportions of percent of Single Men 30 to 34 at 10% of the total and is ranked #3. Only #2 Fall River County (10%), and #1 Pennington County (10%) are larger. Also, it has the largest proportion of percent of Single Men 35 to 39 at 11% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 30 shows the single women between the age of 18 and 65, in each area, broken down by age group. Shannon County has one of the largest proportions of percent of Single women 25 to 29 at 14% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Bennett County with 18%. Second, it has one of the largest proportions of percent of Single women 30 to 34 at 11% of the total and is ranked #2. The only larger county being Jackson County with 18%.

The next section of charts detail information about citizenship. Figure 31 shows a high level view of citizenship. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent of citizens born In US at 100% of the total and is ranked #1. For all citizens, Figure 32 breaks down the original place of birth. it has the largest proportion of percent of people born in the same state they currently live at 87% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 33 shows the age break down of non citizens. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent of non citizens over 18 years old at 100% of the total and is ranked #1. For non citizens, Figure 35 shows the year that they entered the United States. it has the largest proportion of percent of non citizens who entered the US between 2000 to 2009 at 100% of the total and is ranked #1. For all foreign born people who have gone through naturalization (the process of becoming a citizen), Figure 36 shows when they became naturalized. it has the largest proportion of percent of people naturalized in 2010 or later at 100% of the total and is ranked #1.

A map of the globe is shown in Figure 37 which depicts the major regions of the world that people from this place are from. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent of people born in Asia at 67% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 38 shows a breakdown of where all foreign born people come from using large geographic areas. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent of people born in Asia at 67% of the total and is ranked #1.

Figure 39 is a table that breaks out all the foreign born people by where they were born. Shannon County has the largest proportion of percent foreign born in Asia-South East at 66.7% of the total and is ranked #1.
