According to the most recent Darlington County South Carolina demographics data available from the 2022 Census Bureau released in the American Community Survey in November of 2022, Figure 1 Darlington County depicts it has a Population 2021 of 63,433 which is the third most of all other counties in the metro area. The county with the highest population in the area is Florence County which depicts a population of 137,276 (about twice as large). Figure 3 uses the Darlington County population data for a comparison of the population growth/population change estimates from the years 2010 to 2021 and Darlington County South Carolina shows a decline of 5,248 (8%).
The total Darlington County South Carolina greater area population percent change for all areas for the years from 2010 to 2021 is shown in Figure 4 and for Darlington County depicts it has a Population Change of -7.6% which is less than most other counties in the metro area.
Looking at the Darlington County population density (measured as people per square mile) and providing comparisons to both the national and state average population density in Figure 5, Darlington County South Carolina depicts it has 113 people per square mile which is the second most of all the counties in the local area. The next lower population density is Kershaw County approximately three-fourths the size with population density of 89. The county with the highest population density in the area is Florence County which depicts a people per square mile of 172 (51.8% larger). Figure 6 provides Darlington County demographics for the overall median age for all people in the region and Darlington County depicts it has a Median Age of 41.5 which is the second most median age of all the counties in the greater Darlington County region. The county with the highest overall median age of all people in the area is Chesterfield County which shows an age of 42.4 ( only slightly larger).
Figure 8 illustrates the overall diversity breakdown for Darlington County population and ethnicity groups in the area. (note: Hispanic/Latino is broken out separately in the next diagram and also the group denoted as Native ethnicity includes Native American, and Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander.) Darlington County South Carolina has the smallest proportion of Native population at 2.3% of the total. Figure 9 shows the Darlington County South Carolina Hispanic (including non Hispanic whites) population household ethnicity in the region and Darlington County depicts it has a Hispanic or Latino of 2.3% which is the smallest when sorted by people who are Hispanic or Latino of all the other counties in the area.

Figure 10 shows the detailed marriage characteristics broken down by %residents who are married, never married, single, divorced, and widowed. Darlington County has the largest proportion of never married percent at 12% of the total and is ranked #1. Second, it has the largest proportion of percent divorced at 9% of the total and is ranked #1. Figure 11 compares the average household size using the average number of people in a family for Darlington County households. Darlington County depicts it has a Family Size of 3.2 which is the second smallest as measured by average family size of all the other counties in the metro area. The county with the highest average family size in the area is Marlboro County which shows an average family size of 3.8 (18.5% larger).
Looking at Darlington County households that are headed by a husband and wife as a percent of all families in Figure 12, Darlington County depicts it has a Married-couple family of 62% which is in the center range of other counties in the metropolitan area. The county with the highest percent of people in a husband and wife family in the area is Kershaw County which depicts a husband and wife family percent of 73% (17.5% larger).
The next section of charts provide a detailed look at mothers and baby births that occurred over the past 12 months. Figure 13 shows the rate of women aged 15 to 50 years old who have given birth. Darlington County depicts it has a Birth Rate of 5.7% which is in the mid range of other counties in the area. The county with the highest percent of women who gave birth in the area is Florence County which depicts a birth rate of 6.4% (13.0% larger). Figure 14 shows the breakdown of the mother's age for all baby births that occurred in the last 12 months and has the percentage of percent of births to mothers aged 15 to 19 less than most other counties in the metro area at 17% of the total. Second, it has the largest proportion of percent of births to mothers aged 20 to 24 at 45% of the total and is ranked #1.
The next set of demographic data looks at the marital status for Darlington County households which is useful for internet research. Figure 16 compares the total number of single people in each area. Darlington County depicts it has a Total Single People of 56% which is in the middle range of other counties in the greater region. The county with the highest percent of people who are single for any reason in the area is Marlboro County which depicts a percent single of 64% (14.0% larger). Comparing percent of people who are single for any reason to the United States average of 50%, Darlington County is 12.1% larger. Also, in contrast to the state of South Carolina, percent of people who are single for any reason of 50%, Darlington County is 13.3% larger.
